ONE BIG THING

After Success in San Francisco, Will T100 Find Victory in Vancouver?

T100 Triathlon

What is it: This weekend, the T100 lands in Vancouver for round three of its Triathlon World Tour, and comes off the back of a significant series shakeup in San Francisco.

This marks Vancouver’s first major triathlon since the 2008 World Triathlon World Championships. If the T100 can execute a successful weekend of pro and age-group racing, the Pacific Northwest stop could become a jewel in the crown of the startup series.

Men’s race: In San Francisco, Rico Bogen (GER) showed he isn’t just a two-trick pony as he backed up an incredible swim/bike with a rock-solid run to take a shocking victory.

  • But is San Francisco a sign of things to come? Or will he vanish in Vancouver?

Jelle Geens (BEL) and Mika Noodt (GER), both on the podium behind Bogen should be keen to take a step or two higher this weekend.

  • Last year’s T100 World Tour Champion, Marten Van Riel (BEL), will be looking for redemption in Vancouver after an uncharacteristic sixth in San Fran.

And Vancouver sees the return of T100 contracted athlete and fan-favorite, Sam Long (USA), who after winning 70.3 Eagleman on Sunday should be ready to fight for another win.

Willing wildcards: Fresh off his historic WTCS Alghero victory, Miguel Hidalgo (BRA) is hoping for another mega global victory.

After a disappointing mechanical and DNF in SF, Panagiotis Bitados (GRE) will continue to bring his impressive early season form into Vancouver.

And Jackson Laundry (CAN) will carry the hopes of the home country.

Women’s race: After finally breaking Taylor Knibb’s T100 undefeated streak, don’t expect Julie Derron (SUI) to vacate in Vancouver.

  • But she’ll have stiff competition from Knibb. And the return of Lucy Charles-Barclay to the T100 could see an intriguing dynamic with the Brit and the American working together at the front of the race.

There will be no Kate Waugh (GBR) on the podium as she’s skipping out on Vancouver, but fellow contracted athletes, Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) might be ready to make her return to the front of the race after a recent podium drought.

  • And Paula Findlay (CAN) could be dangerous in this race as she returns to her roots in the Great White North.

Wicked wildcards: After singlehandedly crafting the winning breakaway in WTCS Alghero, Maya Kingma (NED) will be looking to create further chaos on the Pacific Coast. Expect her to be pushing hard from the front and maybe even be a part of the race-winning move!

  • Alice Betto (ITA) an Olympian and short course stalwart is a relative unknown at the distance and could turn heads if she can stay in contention on the bike!

And Dominkia Jamnicky (CAN) will be buoyed by the home crowd as she makes her T100 debut.

Tempo’s take: T100 Vancouver has the makings (and the start lists) of a an exceptional event. And unlike previous stops in Singapore and San Francisco, Vancouver will host a T100 for the very first time.

When Vancouver was first announced as a T100 location, it showcased the organization’s strength in identifying a World Class - yet underserved - race destination.

  • With loss of the long-running and iconic IRONMAN Canada, the Pacific Northwest was devoid of a marquee triathlon event.

  • Now, the population of Vancouver (3 million), Seattle (4 million), and even Portland (2.5 million) may have an A-list event in their backyard.

And in the T100’s battle with IRONMAN for multisport relevance and age group race entries, Vancouver could prove to be a rare win.

  • But will they take the victory in Vancouver? Or will early momentum fade to a frustrating finish?
