ONE BIG THING
Ironman Releases Full Broadcast Schedule
EZRA SHAW/GETTY
What is it: Ironman has announced an extensive lineup of its professional races that will be broadcasted live in 2023. In total, over 25 Ironman and 70.3 events will be available for fans to watch.
The 12 Ironman events will be broadcasted on the Ironman Facebook page and Youtube channel.
On April 22nd Ironman Texas will kick off the action, where hopefully we’ll be treated to another epic finish like 2022’s battle between Ben Hoffman (USA) and Magnus Ditlev (DEN).
The Women and Men will have their day in the sun at the very first split Ironman World Championships. With the men in Nice, France on September 10 and the Women in Kona on October 14.
The 13 Ironman 70.3 events will be featured on the streaming platform, Outside Watch.
A spring classic, Ironman 70.3 Oceanside will see a world-class women’s field and the confirmed return of Olympic/Ironman World Champion, Jan Frodeno.
In late August the best in the world will converge in Lahti, Finland for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
And the final live race will be Ironman 70.3 Taupō, New Zealand. The host of the 2024 Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
Tempo’s take: In 2022 Ironman made a massive investment in their coverage of its professional races, and partnered with Outside Watch to help reach an even greater audience.
Alongside the events, Ironman has pushed its Netflix-style series “A Fighting Chance” which highlights the professional athletes, and personalities leading into an event.
But why now: The Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) has made a huge push into live races that are disrupting the Ironman monopoly on long-distance coverage.
Ironman may be trying to simply keep eyeballs on its product with over 25 races on offer.
And they may also just be trying to piggyback off the buzz that the PTO has created.
For whatever reason, the increase in coverage already has athletes, and fans doing a victory lap.

Former Pro Alicia Kaye Switches Roles
Alicia Kaye is a former professional triathlete who now works for Clash Endurance, she spoke with us about her transition to working on the other side of the race barrier and her multifaceted role with Clash.
Hey Alicia! You’ve successfully transitioned from professional triathlete to being a professional, working in Triathlon. How did you find yourself working with Clash Endurance?
In 2020, CLASH Endurance (Challenge North America at the time) produced the PTO Championship in Daytona. CLASH's CEO Bill Christy, invited me to be a part of the commentary team. I loved the experience and was fortunate enough to be invited back for Miami and Daytona 2021. An opportunity to be an official member of the CLASH team presented itself in early 2022 and I decided to take the leap.
What is your role? What does your day-to-day work look like?
My title is Director, Marketing and Pro Competition. I commute into Daytona 2-3 days a week. Our offices are located in the NASCAR building which is directly across the street from Daytona International Speedway. My role has evolved quite a bit, but I gravitated quickly toward strategic partnerships, business development, and marketing. The one thing that has remained constant has been working directly with the pros. Our priority at CLASH Endurance is to ensure the pros have a great time at a safe event. That may include invites, agreements, production, race course design, live coverage, content plan, etc. I really enjoy looking for creative strategic partnerships such as our most recent partnership with OLYMPUS, a massive innovative master-planned community moving into Clermont with a 60-acre sports campus.

🍫 Carbs for healing: Science is showing that ingesting more carbs during endurance exercise can help improve performance, but can it also help improve recovery? Scientists looked at athletes who competed in a mountain marathon and found that the more carbs they consumed, the fewer muscle damage biomarkers they observed. But how many grams of carbs are needed? [Glut4Science]
👏 Chapeau Cam: After making his Ironman New Zealand debut in 1997, professional athlete Cameron Brown (NZ) will be crossing the finish line one final time this weekend in Taupō. Over 25 years, the Kiwi has seen 20 podiums at IMNZ and won the event 12 times. What a journey! [Stuff.co.nz]
🤔 Indoor cycling champion: This is a thought-provoking article on the reasons why this athlete is essentially an exclusive indoor cyclist. With the rise of Zwift, Rouvy, and others, there has been a huge shift toward these indoor platforms. Coupled with the pandemic-induced shift toward indoor activities, one might say we are in a golden age of indoor cycling. Anecdotally, I’ve been T-Boned by a car riding outdoors, but have yet to experience that in Watopia. [Cycling Weekly]

READER QUESTION
Tempo reader Paul Freeman is currently training for the Muskoka Marathon and he was hoping to get some help from fellow subscribers,
“I’m looking for motivational quotes that I can hang up and glance at around my treadmill during my long runs when I can’t get outside due to weather conditions. Wondering if you have covered this in past articles or could ask readers which quotes they always go to when trying to push through a difficult training session.
Thanks
