ONE BIG THING

IRONWOMEN Shake Pro Series in Lake Placid!

IRONMAN

What is it: For the 26th year in a row, the athletes took on IRONMAN Lake Placid. And in the end, it took Olympic-worthy efforts to conquer the iconic course!

Men’s Race

With a recent win at IRONMAN Cairns, Matthew Marquardt (USA) was hoping to double up and ensure he would still be in contention for the lucrative IRONMAN Pro Series. But he would be up against defending champion, Trevor Foley (USA), and recent IRONMAN European runner-up, Kristian Høgenhaug (DEN).

🏊‍♂️ Swim: The two loop swim saw Marquardt, and Høgenhaug exit within 90 seconds of the leader. Jason West (USA) also started his IRONMAN debut well exiting the water in fourth.

  • Foley would be on the backfoot early as he finished the swim over six minutes from the front!

🚴‍♂️ Bike: The early leaders, including Marquardt, Høgenhaug, Bradley Weiss (ZAF), and Robert Kallin (SWE) seemed to be playing the long game. Meanwhile, Foley, and Leon Chevalier (FRA) were full gas and 75km into the ride, they had found the front of the race.

  • As the bike continued, Wiess, Kallin, and Chevalier would fall off - and hemorrhage time to the lead three.

Just as the ride was ending, Marquardt was able to establish a small lead (30 seconds) over Høgenhaug, and almost 90 seconds to Foley.

🏃‍♂️ Run: Starting the run Marquardt was in the drivers seat. But Foley wasn’t ready to just hand over the title…

Watch: Foley fly’s past Marquardt to take the Lake Placid lead!

  • Foley was flying, and by the 10km mark he had caught Marquardt and seemingly waved goodbye. By the halfway mark he’d built up a 70 second lead.

Not long after, Foley’s lead collapsed. Marquardt then retook the lead and held strong to the finish, taking his second full-distance win of the year. Høgenhaug, sensing weakness his own pass on Foley, finishing second.

  • 🥇 Matthew Marquardt (USA)

  • 🥈 Kristian Høgenhaug (DEN)

  • 🥉 Trevor Foley (USA)

Women’s race

The pressure was on defending champion Danielle Lewis. And in the end, a deluge of rain, and new full-distance talent was too much to overcome.

🏊‍♂️ Swim: There was a definite shakeup in the swim that saw Rebecca Clarke (NZ) lead out of the water with Holly Lawrence (GBR), a former 70.3 World Champion making her full distance debut right on her feet.

The second pack containing Marta Sanchez (ESP), and Lisa Perterer (AUT) were 2.5 minutes behind the leaders.

Recent IRONMAN Cairns winner Jackie Hering (USA), and Solvieg Løvseth (NOR) were 5+ minutes in arrears. Lewis was 12 minutes back out of the water, effectively ending her title defense.

🚴‍♂️ Bike: Early on the bike Perterer and Sanchez had taken the lead and were beginning to drop Lawrence. Suddenly, Perterer was slapped with a drafting penalty as she began to catch the back of the male pro race. She would serve a frustrating three minutes.

Undeterred, Perterer continued to push, and as the bike progressed she had caught back up to Lawrence, and eventually, Sanchez!

  • Behind, Løvseth had kept the gap steady to the leaders. She would eventually start the run just under six minutes back of Perterer and Sanchez.

🏃‍♂️ Run: Perterer quickly jumped back into the lead, and by mile ten she had a 3 minute lead over Sanchez. Would she see her first full distance win?

Halfway through, she still had a two minute lead over second. But her pace was beginning to slow, and Løvseth, now in second, was only getting quicker!

In the blink of an eye, Løvseth had made up the gap to Perterer. And at mile 19 she would make the race-winning pass. Perterer would hold on to a strong second, while Sanchez would end up in third.

  • 🥇 Solveig Løvseth (NOR)

  • 🥈 Lisa Perterer (AUT)

  • 🥉 Marta Sanchez (ESP)

Pro Series Shakeup

With an 8th place finish, Jackie Hering (USA) jumps into the Pro Series lead. Plus, Løvseth, Sanchez, and Perterer all arrived in the top 10 after stellar performances.

On the men’s side, Leon Chevalier’s 4th place finish elevated him to first overall in the Pro Series standings, with Marquardt a close second.

  • And Høgenhaug, who only weeks ago wasn’t even in the top 50, is now sitting 4th overall after an unreal string of racing including his second at IM Frankfurt and second at 70.3 Swansea last weekend!

Tempo’s take: The new crop of women’s full distance talent was on full display in Lake Placid. Not long ago, both Løvseth and Perterer were grinding it out in the short course trenches, and now they find themselves at the pinaccle of IRONMAN racing.

  • Both will be on the start line in Kona, and with their unique skillsets they should add another dimension for what is shaping up to be a race for the ages.

With Placid in the books, the road to the World Championships is clear, and cutthroat. The final stretch won’t just reward fitness. It’ll demand excellence, and the ability to perform when it matters most.

  • For the Series leaders, the chase is on. For the rest? It’s now or never.
