Kamylle Frenette on the Pavé to the Paris Paralympics

We catch up with the Canadian Paralympian as she pushes for the podium in Paris

Kamylle Frenette competed at the Tokyo Paralympics and finished 4th in the PTS5 category. She’s looking to be on the podium next year in Paris, and we caught up with her before this weekend’s World Triathlon Para Cup in Besançon, France.

How has your preseason training been? What was your big training focus this winter?

My preseason has been great! The big focus this winter was the bike - definitely the biggest gap for me. We put in lots of miles and are working hard on technical riding. I'll be getting a brand new setup in a couple of weeks which is super exciting!

What does a typical training week for you look like?

I usually do around 4 swims, 3-4 runs, 3-4 bike sessions, and 2-3 strength workouts. Every week is different, which is the best part of triathlon in my opinion!

What’s your goal for the race in Besançon this weekend?

This is my first race since November, and many of the top girls will be there so I'm excited to see where I stand and use this race as something to build on and identify any gaps we can work on.

I also have my dad here with me for this race, which is extra special. When I first started triathlon we used to travel across New Brunswick every weekend of summer to race each other in local triathlons. I know I have a big season ahead and with the intensity of high-performance sport, I tend to forget why I started this triathlon. Having him here reminds me of my why, it's grounding and a perfect way to kick off a big season!

How does this race fit within the context of your season?

The qualification period for Paris starts in July so this is my last race before points start counting towards that. I'll use this race to try new things, sharpen the little details and make sure I'm ready to roll in Montreal on July 8th!

What’s your big race goal for this season?

The two big races for this season are the Paris Test Event in August, and then Worlds at the end of September in Pontevedra Spain. It's a super exciting season ahead, and my personal goal is to really enjoy the ride. I'm realizing how awesome it is to be able to swim, bike, and run around the world. I know it won't last forever, so I’ll make sure I embrace every moment.

What does your support crew look like on the pavé to the Paris Paralympics?

I would dare say I have the best support crew in the whole world!! I've recently partnered with Assumption Life, a major sponsor who is making a big difference in my pathway. I've also been honored to receive support from CanFund multiple times, a non-profit organization supporting many Canadian Athletes. Of course, my coaches, training partners, parents, husband Brandon, friends and my dog Leo (the best cool-down buddy!) are constantly providing lots of support. Helping with the highs and lows of sports :)

It truly takes a village!
