ONE BIG THING
Omanman! IRONMAN’s New Mid-East Match

IRONMAN
What is it: Buried in the excitement of last weekend’s men’s IRONMAN World Championship in Nice was the announcement from IRONMAN that it had signed “a comprehensive and multi-faceted global partnership” with Experience Oman.
The partnership will see Experience Oman become:
The “Official Global Destination” and Global Premier Partner of the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Global Series through 2030.
Own the naming rights for the IRONMAN Pro Series beginning in 2026.
Host of the 2029 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in the capital, Muscat.
Host of various full and 70.3 IRONMAN events.
2040 Vision: The IRONMAN investment is part of Oman’s Vision 2040 - a comprehensive social and economic roadmap that seeks to diversify the Sultanate’s economy beyond oil.
As Oman positions itself as a premier global sports-tourism destination, the partnership with IRONMAN accelerates that ambition.
An Omani tourism official explained, “This partnership represents a strategic opportunity to showcase Oman’s unique tourism assets, from its rich heritage and authentic culture…”
“Moreover, it serves as a platform to promote the investment opportunities available in the tourism sector—supporting increased tourist inflows, particularly from European markets, and strengthening the sector’s contribution to the national economy.”
Omanman: For IRONMAN, the partnership provides more than just an opportunity to gain a foothold in the ever-expanding Middle East triathlon market. As reported in City AM, the commercial partnership could be worth more than $40m (£30m) - the largest in the sport’s history.
Mid-East Multisport: Oman’s overture is another in the Middle East’s warm embrace (and investment) in triathlon.
The United Arab Emirates was one of the first in the region to invest heavily in tri. First, with the Tri Dubai team - featuring IM World Champion Craig Alexander.
Abu Dhabi has hosted a flagship World Triathlon Championship Series race since 2015.
And in November, Dubai will host the penultimate stop on the T100 Triathlon World Tour.
Qatar - also featured on the T100 Triathlon World Tour - was announced as the naming partner of the upstart Pro Series through 2030 back in January.
Bahrain - perhaps the most controversial Kingdom - exploded onto the scene with the star-studded Bahrain Endurance 13 Team. The team, filled with Olympic and IRONMAN Champions, was suspiciously similar-sounding to the Bahrain Thirteen group of political activists.
For many years, the Kingdom hosted the 70.3 Middle Eastern Championships. Today, it still has a strong roster of Pro triathletes, as well as ownership of Supertri’s Crown Racing.
And Saudi Arabia, the host of the Supertri Grand Final from 2022 to 2024, recently jumped into the long-course triathlon scene as the leader of a $40m funding round for the T100.
Tempo’s take: Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Qatar National Vision 2030, Oman Vision 2040. We don’t understand why the economic overhaul of oil-rich nations has to involve triathlon, but we’re not complaining!
The embrace of multisport has also tracked with the liberalization of traditionally insular Middle East societies. Seeing athletes like Dr. Dina Al-Tayeb and Hana Al Nabulsi compete on the world stage speaks to the progress these nations are seeing.
Although the unchallenged enthusiasm for Vision money is concerning. Are the major triathlon entities overreliant on easy Emirati money? What happens when 2030 rolls around and the population hasn’t adopted multisport en masse?
$40m is a tough budget hole to fill, even for IRONMAN.
Should Triathlon entities chase big-money destination deals? |

Tempo Reviews: Precision Fuel & Hydration Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix
Training hard or in the heat? This mix is for you!
Key takeaways 👇
An ideal blend of carbs and sodium.
Perfect for fueling intense training, especially in hot weather or indoor environments.
Mixes well and has a mild taste for exceptional drinkability.
Matt’s Review
I have to tell you, I’ve never once in my life finished a race or a quality training session thinking, “Man, I wish I’d had less carbs and sodium...”
We all understand the importance of high-carb fueling for intense training and racing, but sodium - which has long been a health boogeyman - plays a critical role in keeping you hydrated, allowing you to actually transport those crucial carbs to your muscles!
I’ve used the PF60 Drink Mix in training - especially for quality run workouts and bike rides on the indoor trainer.
In each of these settings, carbohydrate AND sodium demands are incredibly high - making this mix a perfect solution.
Compared to competitors like Carbs Fuel, the PF60 Drink Mix has more than double the sodium per serving.
And side-by-side with Skratch, PF60 has more carbs and more sodium per serving (and a better price!)
The PF60 Drink Mix also happens to be… a great mix! The mild flavor means flavor fatigue is forgotten.
Plus, it blends perfectly into water. Because the last thing you need is a chunk of mix heading straight for your windpipe during a hard interval!

YOU SAID
Here’s what you said about the Men’s IM World Championships!
Reader: It was an exciting race because of all the lead changes. You got to see the athletes’ strength and struggles as they fought for the lead. It was one of the most inspiring championships I can remember. Also showed that team training has benefits over solo training.
Reader: The racing in Nice is incredibly exciting. I’m truly disappointed about the return to Kona.
Reader: I'm in both the "It was incredible" and "Kona is coming back" camps. Nice is a better course, and I'm glad 70.3 Worlds will be there a few times over the next several years (I actually really like that 70.3 Worlds rotates around). But Kona is Kona. "That big race in Hawaii" is what has drawn so many people to the sport, and if IM wants to keep growing the sport, making even more of a spectacle will do it. Now we just need seven racers coming off the bike together and running shoulder to shoulder through the lava fields and Energy Lab!
Reader: I like the challenging bike course, but it doesn't have the aura of the Big Island.
Reader: May be an unpopular opinion, but as a spectator and fan, I enjoy #1, the men's and women's races on separate days, and #2, I enjoy seeing the two races in different locations with different challenges facing the triathletes from year to year. Kona is great, but it is not the only place that can host a world championship-level race.
Reader: I’m happy that the women’s and men’s Ironman World Championship race will come together and return to Kona in 2026 as it was for so many years. Anyone can do Nice if they are so inclined, but you can’t just register for Kona. Here’s the link for next year if anyone is interested: https://www.ironman.com/races/im-france/register
Reader: The race sucked in the middle of the night, and outside Chanel was hard to work with; YouTube should have been on.
Reader: Epic! and showed that if we were just patient, it would gain its place in the pantheon!
Reader: A truly fabulous race! The venue demonstrated once again that it is an outstanding course and worthy of showcasing the very finest triathletes. The only negative about Nice was the 4-loop run, which was pancake flat.
Reader: If that wasn't engaging enough for you, please check for a pulse!
