ONE BIG THING
Massive Field and Serious Pro Series Shake Up On Tap at IRONMAN Frankfurt
IRONMAN
What is it: This Sunday, a star-studded men’s pro field will take on IRONMAN Frankfurt in the final full-distance IRONMAN Pro Series event before the upcoming World Championship(s).
And with significant Pro Series points on offer, there are sure to be insane performances and massive blow-ups!
Big dawgs: As the designated IRONMAN European Championships, Frankfurt has a significant boost in prize money ($87,500) and six scarce spots for October’s men’s IRONMAN World Championships in Kona. And with 88 men on the start list, it’s more of a question of who WON’T be competing in Frankfurt. Headliners include:
Patrick Lange (GER) - 2x IRONMAN World Champion
Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR) - Olympic gold medalist, IRONMAN/70.3 World Champion.
Sam Long (USA) - #3 PTO world-ranked triathlete.
Matt Hanson (USA) - Current IRONMAN Pro Series leader.
Trevor Foley (USA) - Recent IRONMAN Lake Placid winner.
Tempo’s take: With few full-distance races left in the IRONMAN Pro Series, Frankfurt will play a huge role in deciding who will be on the top step of the final pro series rankings.
The big unknowns for this race are Blummenfelt and Long. Both athletes are in great form, but between the Olympics (Blummenfelt) and T100 Triathlon World Tour (Long), both have admitted that they haven’t trained specifically for a full-distance IRONMAN.
Expect both athletes to be pushing at the front of the race and riding the line between winning and wasted!
In the series standings look for Jackson Laundry (CAN) and Trevor Foley (USA) to put in big challenges to the current leader, Matt Hanson (USA).
As the Pro Series continues to march on, it’s clear that IRONMAN has been executing well on its original promise of a dynamic and intriguing points chase. In both the men’s and women’s standings there’s still opportunity for massive shake-ups, especially at upcoming World Championship events.
And IRONMAN isn’t ready to settle. Earlier this week all pro series participants were invited to provide mid-season feedback on the series with specific questions regarding athlete exclusivity.
Based on the questions we saw, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see IRONMAN take a page from the T100 playbook and start offering key athletes influencer-style contracts to race exclusively in next year’s pro series.
It’s a dream scenario for pro athlete’s wallets and a nightmare for the talent-hungry T100 Triathlon World Tour.
How to watch: The race starts at 6:25 CET. You can watch live in the USA and Canada on Outside Watch. The rest of the world can watch at IRONMAN Now.

First up, Lazy Huevos Rancheros!
Chef says: I find since becoming a triathlete that the organization and planning that goes with eating is the biggest key to make sure I stay on top of nutrition/intake. I'm definitely not a dietician, so like most of us, I just eat by feel.
I eat a of ton of eggs and beans in general. I love a Huevos-like breakfast as you get a variety of proteins...and it’s delicious and easy!
Lazy Huevos Rancheros

YOU SAID
Here’s what Tempo readers thought about what would make supertri races cool to them!
Reader: I watched the Malibu Super League race after my son raced the collegiate nationals. It was so fun to watch and as a super fan very rewarding. The only spectators were some of the college students who raced earlier. The 1000s of age groupers who raced earlier did not stay either because they did not care or even understand what Super League was. I hope they can educate USA triathletes better this time around because it is a huge missed opportunity.
Reader: Having opportunities to watch it on tv for free. The races need to be promoted better and also their start times. Also draft legal racing is kind of boring to watch. It basically comes down to the run.
Reader: I think a lot of triathlons success and particularly SuperTri lies with creating events that people want to travel to. Right now the only people that attend pro triathlon events (apart from the Olympics) are those participating in the AG events that run alongside them. Triathlon needs to create festival weekends with live music, grand stands, merchandise tents, entertainment, VIP dinners etc. something that makes me want to travel to…….Boston to watch SuperTri live. We will never be the NFL with 60,000 fans. But SuperTri is our best chance of creating a “traveling circus” that can attract 10,000 fans per event.
Reader: I would love short course races worth traveling for. Travelled from Alaska to Malibu for SuperLeague the first year they had it there. I got to race in the morning and then watch the pros in the afternoon, which was one of the best spectator sports I ever saw. It was really fun to run down the beach, watch the swim, and then run up the beach for the bikes and run and repeat it for the next rounds. After, I got to talk to and take my picture with Kristian Blummenfelt and Richard Murray (loved his YouTube videos) and I got to see all the other short course stars plus Lucy Charles-Barclay up close. I would travel for more of these if they had a good age-group olympic distance race for me followed by getting to watch the pros race.
Reader: Not to be greedy but I think all three of your choices with make it interesting. Making it fun affordable, and interactive would be a killer combo.
