WEEKEND RACES

The men’s race was missing pre-race favorites including one of the sport’s greatest, Jan Frodeno, and one of the sport’s most entertaining, Lionel Sanders. But the race still had incredible firepower, which was fully on display this weekend.
🏊♂️ Léo Bergère (FRA) proved why he is one of the best triathletes in the world by leading the charge in the water, exiting the swim with a solo lead, and a new course record.
Léo Bergère brought his swimming legs today as the first male out of the water!

🚴♂️ Starting the bike, Bergère was quickly joined by a group including Ben Kanute (USA), Nick Quenet (RSA), and Matt McElroy (USA).
Meanwhile, Sam Long (USA) was on the hunt for his own bike course record. He rode with Jackson Laundry (CAN) and George Goodwin (GBR) to bridge the gap to the leaders at halfway.
When the bike was done, there remained a leading group of four, with Long, Bergère, Goodwin, and Laundry hitting T2 first, with West a further 3 minutes back starting the run.
Sam Long and Léo Bergère are staying together onto the run!

🏃♂️ Long and Bergère started the run together, but the Frenchman quickly pulled away and thought he would pull away for good. But Jason West was on the hunt.
Jason West is not human. He will destroy himself to catch Bergere, and he may do it!

Leo is in the lead, but he sees Jason behind...

After a long day of racing, Bergère was able to hold off a hard-charging Jason West (and his 1:07 half marathon) by 11 seconds!
🥇 Léo Bergère (FRA)
🥈 Jason West (USA)
🥉 Jackson Laundry (CAN)
Tempo’s take: An impressive start list leads to impressive racing, it’s that simple. For many of the athletes on the start line, Bergère was a bit of an unknown commodity. But he dominated the swim, rode with the best on a hard ride, and finished with a great run.
Jason West clearly shows he is gunning for Most Improved and MVP thus far, as he almost outran the short-course world champion.

The women’s race had no significant DNS’s, and was definitely the most competitive race of the day at the pointy end. It was going to take a world-class effort to win in this field.
🏊♀️ Holly Lawrence (GBR) was like a shark on the hunt for the pro men who started three minutes ahead of her. She blasted the swim and claimed many victims en route to a solo lead of over 90 seconds out of the water.
Adios 👋🏼 Holly Lawrence started 3 minutes after the Pro Men's pack, and she has started to pass some of them in the water 🔥

🚴♀️ Onto the bike, Lawrence was being chased by a super-pack that included Paula Findlay (CAN), Kat Matthews (GBR), Chelsea Sodaro (USA) and Tamara Jewitt (CAN).
From the coverage, it appeared Findlay was doing the lion’s share of the chase, and she was able to bridge to gap to Lawrence at around halfway, but with Matthews, Sodaro, and Jewitt in tow.
Matthews led the four-person pack (Jewitt had dropped off slightly) into T2, setting the stage for an incredible run.
Incredible transition faceoff with Kat and Holly!

🏃♀️ Sodaro took the early lead onto the run. But with Jewitt being so close to the lead, the Canadian was motivated to chase. At around halfway she caught Sodaro, and wouldn’t look back en route to the biggest win of her career.
Congratulations to Tamara Jewett, your 2023 Athletic Brewing IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside Women's Champion 🏆

🥇 Tamara Jewitt (CAN)
🥈 Chelsea Sodaro (USA)
🥉 Kat Matthews (GBR)
Tempo’s take: The dynamic in the women’s race was incredible, and if this was the first race of the year, it sets an incredible standard for what the rest of the season will look like. Jewitt always has an incredible run, but this was the first time she came off the bike within striking distance of the leaders, and she certainly made the most of it.
Lawrence was in a tough position having such a dominant swim, but with no one to work with. If Findlay was with her out of the swim, this race would have looked a lot different!
