Who Wins in a Duel Between T100 and IRONMAN? The Sport!

IRONMAN and T100 faceoff, better hydration, and how to fall asleep quicker!

TOGETHER WITH PLASMAIDE

Good morning everyone,

From Singapore, to Oceanside, and all the way to West Palm Beach, it was a big weekend for triathlon. For some, a high stakes battle with some of the best athletes in the world. For others, maybe a competition for a World Championship slot. For myself, and many others, it was an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the sport and put out a solid effort on a Sunday morning.

I had an absolute blast this weekend being a part of the inaugural Bill Bone Olympic Triathlon weekend. I met so many incredible athletes and members of the West Palm Beach triathlon community, (and Tempo subscribers!) and it was inspiring hearing about the positive impact of the sport on their lives.

And it was a reminder of how the foundation of this sport is supported by generous patrons like Bill Bone who invest in local races and the multisport community!

In today’s edition:

  • ⚔️ Who wins in a duel between T100 and IRONMAN? Triathlon!

  • 🧃 Want to hydrate better? Start here!

  • 😴 And this one trick can help you sleep faster and recover better!

Thanks for being here.

ONE BIG THING

Who Wins in a Duel Between T100 and IRONMAN? The Sport!

What is it: It was a massive weekend of professional triathlon racing with IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside and T100 Singapore - the first stop in the T100 Triathlon World Tour - both taking place.

T100 Singapore Savagery

Women’s race: With Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) as a two-time winner of the event, it was easy to bet on her for the win. But as the Aussie uncharacteristically faltered, a relative unknown ascended to new heights.

Kate Waugh (GBR) - an Olympian and former U23 World Champion - used a masterful swim and bike to start the run with more than five minutes to the next athlete. She then proceeded to put in the days fastest run and won with the largest margin of victory in T100 history!

  • Lisa Perterer (AUT), who was second, finished almost seven minutes behind Waugh! 😱

Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR) would put in another strong Singapore performance finishing in 3rd. Pre-race favorite Gentle would settle for sixth.

  • 🥇 Kate Waugh (GBR)

  • 🥈 Lisa Perterer (AUT)

  • 🥉 Lucy Charles- Barclay (GBR)

Men’s race: After the women’s race showed how brutal the heat and humidity could be, many of the men, of course, completely ignored the lessons and blew themselves up.

Hayden Wilde (NZ), managed the best in the conditions, and showed he will be the man to beat in this year’s T100 Tour. The Kiwi swam just off the leaders, and had the fastest bike/run combo, resulting in a comfortable win.

Leo Bergere (FRA) and Marten Van Riel (BEL) rounded out the podium, ensuring they are still in the hunt for the T100 Tour title!

  • 🥇 Hayden Wilde (NZ)

  • 🥈 Leo Bergere (FRA)

  • 🥉 Marten Van Riel (BEL)

Tempo’s take: In what was one of the most impressive long course debuts in history, Kate Waugh showed that she isn’t just in the T100 to “get some experience,” she’s here to win and maybe be the athlete who can finally crack Taylor Knibb at a T100?!?!

  • Not to be outdone, Marten Van Riel had maybe one of the most impressive back-to-back weekends of racing we’ve ever seen. After battling hard at last week’s IRONMAN South Africa, he came into Singapore against an incredible field with extremely tired legs - and still got on the podium! 🤯

Overall, Singapore was a strong start to the T100 season and a clear step up from last year’s muted event in Miami. The broadcast was polished, the performances were impressive, and the event looked to be an overall success with over 1,700 age group athletes competing.

  • And if it wasn’t for a certain athlete, Singapore could have been the winner of the weekend…

Outstanding Oceanside

Women’s race: Pre-race it looked like it would be an All-Canadian battle between Paula Findlay and Tamara Jewitt. But a swim that missed the mark left Jewitt with too much daylight to overcome, and Findlay - aboard her beautiful new bike - was able to take the win even on a self-described off day.

Jackie Hering (USA) was rock-solid in all three disciplines and pushed Findlay through the final miles - she would finish second. Danielle Lewis (USA) closed well on the run to finish third.

  • 🥇 Paula FIndlay (CAN)

  • 🥈 Jackie Hering (USA)

  • 🥉 Danielle Lewis (USA)

Men’s race: With Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR), Gustav Iden (NOR), Patrick Lange (GER), and a men’s field absolutely packed with talent, many (including this editor) were saying Lionel Sanders (CAN) wouldn’t be able to win again in Oceanside.

We were very wrong.

  • Over three minutes in arrears in the swim, and still more than two minutes back after the bike, Sanders ran like a man possessed and quickly bridged the gap to Seth Rider (USA), Gustav Iden (NOR), and Rudy Von Berg (USA).

For a time it appeared the quartet would run together - setting up a spectacular sprint finish - but once Sanders made his move there would be nothing stopping him from taking the win.

  • 🥇 Lionel Sanders (CAN)

  • 🥈 Rudy Von Berg (USA)

  • 🥉 Gustav Iden (NOR)

Tempo’s take: Would Kristian Blummenfelt have taken the win if not for an unfortunate flat tire? We’ll never know…

What we do know is that Lionel Sanders winning in Oceanside isn’t just another athlete winning another race. The reality is, he is one of the few athletes who truly transcends triathlon and engages people outside of the sport. This win (and incoming YouTube) will inspire new athletes to take take on triathlon.

  • IRONMAN couldn’t have scripted a better result. And this time, a win for them is a win for the sport writ large.

And for the T100, even after Singapore’s success, most of the triathlon world will be coming out of the weekend remembering Lionel’s incredible comeback and how it all went down.

  • Sanders hasn’t committed to the T100 or IRONMAN Pro Series…Yet. Could some of the recent 10m dollar investment be enough to convince the free agent to take his talents on T100 Tour? At this stage, it might not be enough!
