ONE BIG THING

Wilde, Waugh Crowned T100 World Champions in Qatar

T100

What is it: On Friday, the 2025 T100 Triathlon World Tour wrapped up with the Grand Final in Doha, Qatar.

  • And after a season filled with drama, upsets, and a (near) catastrophic crash, the two athletes who began the season on top would ultimately triumph.

Men’s Race

Swim: As is signature for the men’s T100, the swim saw little separation. Vincent Luis (FRA) led a group of eight athletes, including Dubai-winner Morgan Pearson (USA), Jelle Geens (BEL), and Marten Van Riel (BEL).

  • Hayden Wilde (NZ) - showing his improved swim - was only 40 seconds behind the leaders as he started the bike.

Bike: It didn’t take long for Wilde to find the race lead. But early on, chaos ensued as Rico Bogen (GER) - while leading - crashed hard.

Crash aside, the bike was fairly on script. And Wilde would lead a group of five, including Bogen, Mika Noodt (GER), Matias Margirier (FRA), and Van Riel into T2.

About 2 and a half minutes later, a group containing Geens and Pearson would roll into T2. The $200,000 T100 World Championship Tour win may have been wrapped up. But second place, and the $170,000 prize, were still very much up for grabs!

Run: By the time the first lap had been completed, Wilde had won. But behind, the race was starting to heat up!

Van Riel, Noodt, Margirier, and Bogen were in a battle for second. Or so they thought.

  • Pearson had quickly dropped Geens and was making a massive push for the pack.

For most of the run, Wilde was on cruise control. He would cross the line, victorious once again, and now, the 2025 T100 Triathlon World Tour Champion.

  • 🥇 Hayden Wilde (NZ)

  • 🥈 Morgan Pearson (USA)

  • 🥉 Marten Van Riel (BEL)

  • 🥈 Mika Noodt (GER) - $170,000

  • 🥉 Jelle Geens (BEL) - $150,000

Women’s Race

Swim: Kate Waugh (GBR), Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR), and Julie Derron (SUI) - it was winner-take-all for the T100 Triathlon World Tour crown. And from the first strokes, Charles-Barclay was determined to break away.

But she couldn’t drop rival Waugh. Both athletes would exit the swim in a group also containing Jessica Learmonth (GBR), Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR), and Taylor Spivey (USA).

  • Derron - with a strong swim - exited 80” behind the leaders.

Bike: Similar to T100 London, Charles-Barclay, Waugh, and Learmonth pulled away from the rest and were able to slightly grow their lead to a group containing Derron, Paula Findlay (CAN), and Lucy Byram (GBR).

Run: Waugh started the run just ahead of Charles-Barclay, and almost 2 minutes in advance of Derron. By the end of the first lap, she had extended her lead to almost 30 seconds.

Behind, Derron and Taylor-Brown were asserting their dominance on the run, and had moved into second and third. Could either of them catch Waugh?

No.

Waugh would hold on to her lead - crossing the line as the 2025 T100 Triathlon World Tour Champion. Taylor-Brown would earn her first T100 podium in second, while Derron would claim the final podium spot in third.

Watch: Waugh emotional as she wins in Qatar.

  • 🥇 Kate Waugh (GBR)

  • 🥈 Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR)

  • 🥉 Julie Derron (SUI)

Tempo’s Take

Waugh and Wilde won the first T100 race in Singapore and the final one in Qatar. So I guess not much really happened in between? Lol.

In 2025, the T100 saw Wilde’s near-season-ending car crash and incredible comeback.

Sounds like a hell of a season-long narrative!

And heading into 2026, the T100 looks stronger than ever. It has money in the bank. A robust 9-event calendar with blue-chip races in Gold Coast, Singapore, Vancouver, and London. Plus: races in capital-rich Middle Eastern countries that are hungry for the sport.

And now, a blockbuster announcement that they will be uniting with World Triathlon to produce “The Triathlon World Tour.” The tour, starting in 2027, will become the T100 World Championship Series (long course).

Are there still issues with the T100? Of course! Athletes are still waiting to get paid, it’s still not profitable, and there is a significant trust gap between them and their age group athletes.

  • But crucially, they have momentum. And in 2026, momentum could lead to market fit.
