ONE BIG THING

Paris 2024 Olympic Triathlon and Paratriathlon Courses Revealed

Et ils sont magnifique!

World Triathlon has announced the incredible courses for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Triathlon events.

As the athletes battle it out for the podium, hopefully they’ll take a second to appreciate the incredible landmarks en route including:

Paris Olympic transition zone/riverside stadium location

The transition zone and spectator stadium will be on the Pont Alexandre III and the athletes will swim in the Seine River.

  • Securing stadium tickets will no doubt be challenging. Thankfully, the rest of the course will be open to the public, and you can bet hundreds of thousands will take to the streets to catch a glimpse of the incredible performances.

Tempo’s Take: For a bike course just under four miles a lap, they’ve done a great job making it as Instagrammable as possible. And the transition/stadium combo is just *french chef’s kiss.*

Of course, a huge amount of work went into making this venue even possible. And for all the (often justified) complaints of Olympic excess, we believe the legacy of a clean and swimmable river for Parisians is well worth the price.

RACE WEEKEND

St. Anthony’s Triathlon

An Olympic distance race that, after 40 years, has earned its place as one of America’s best triathlons.

Paula Findlay (CAN) is the defending champion and heavy favorite for the Women’s race. She should use her all-around strength in the three disciplines to take the win.

But Olympian Vitoria Lopes (BRA) is coming into this race with a chip on her shoulder after an unfortunate wrong turn cost her a podium in last year’s event. Look for her to exit the swim in the lead and try to hold on.

  • Haley Chura (USA), Jodie Stimpson (GBR), and Rachel Olson (USA) will also be battling for spots on the podium.

After a red-hot start to the season, Jason West (USA) will be looking for another win in Florida. But he’ll have some solid competition in the form of defending St. Anthony’s champion, Matthew Sharpe (CAN) (sounds like an O.K. guy) and Eric Lagerstrom (USA).

  • Mark Dubrick (USA) will inject a ton of pace in the swim and could be an important factor if the athletes are hoping to hold off West.

  • Nick Quesnet (RSA) had a great effort in Oceanside, and will be looking to push the pace on the swim/bike.

Tempo’s take: As mentioned in the intro, we’re going to be in St. Petersburg for the race this weekend. So please say hi!

Speaking as a pro, this event is world-class. The organizers really get behind the race, whether it’s ensuring each athlete has a homestay for the weekend and giving the athletes opportunities to connect with the local tri club. Not to mention the generous prize purse. It’s unfortunate there aren’t more Olympic distance pro races, as well as races with such an incredible atmosphere. No doubt the racing will be 🔥🔥🔥

TRAINING THOUGHT

Why The Pre-Race “Go” Makes You Go Faster!

The pre-race line at the Porto-John can feel like an eternity (never mind the usually rough experience of being in one). But scientists have quantified what we most likely already know: the pre-race go WILL make you go race faster.

A recent study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition studied whether endurance athletes who 💩 before competition-like effort perform better than those who didn’t.

🚴‍♀️ Thirteen elite triathletes completed a cycling time trial.

🔬 Oxygenation and blood distribution in the prefrontal brain and sub-navel regions were monitored during cycling.

In the end, researchers found that

  • Defecation improved blood pooling in the prefrontal brain during exercise and enhanced cycling performance in triathletes.

  • Systolic blood pressure was decreased (I.e. less toilet tension).

…No s$&t
