YOU SAID

Here’s what Tempo readers said about what’s important for them when choosing a race!

Reader: Enjoying a great atmosphere and getting to watch the pros on a similar course around the same time.

Reader: Race-day value matters for me. I will happily pay more for a safe, well-organized event, a unique/inspiring course, a premium experience, etc. And at the other end of the spectrum, I will also happily participate in the small, local, grassroots races, knowing that they are not going to be "Ironman quality," but their lower relative cost is commensurate with the experience.

The ones that are frustrating are where you pay a premium for a higher-value event, only to have that event poorly organized and executed. The one T100 age group event that I have done - Lake Las Vegas in October 2024 - was a premium and well-organized event (bike course notwithstanding), and good value for the cost. The planned-and-then-cancelled 2025 event was going to be a higher price, with questionable value return.

I can honestly say that every Ironman event I have done (both full and 70.3) has been worth the price paid. I have never felt that I got less value for the money with the Ironman brand.

Reader: Im happy to pay if I get closed roads, we'll stocked aid stations, happy volunteers, and good vibes!

Reader: I'm on the fence about traveling from the U.S. to Qatar for the T100 race, but hesitating because I'm worried the age group race will get cancelled last minute, or start at 5 a.m., or have a bad course. Curious to hear what the problems were in France before I decide.

Reader: Inclusive and welcoming event for beginners or athletes of all levels.

Reader: Well-organized, closed roads, and a welcoming environment top my list!

Reader: You may have a different answer until you race an event that is not well-executed in a safe manner. It makes you appreciate the effort of the organizers in races that are well-executed in this manner. There are a few races on my list that I will never do again for this reason.

Reader: Location, venue, course!

Reader: Competitive age group field and an opportunity to work for something bigger (e.g., series, world champs, etc).

Reader: Location and a history of being a well-run event

Reader: A great location, a fair price, and a well-supported race.
