A guide to your glute muscles, plus fueling (and saving) well!

TOGETHER WITH TRIHARD
Good morning everyone,
After a hard day of racing in St. George, I’ve started to put in some work towards my next race at 70.3 Boulder. And for a few weeks of my prep I’ll be training with Jake Birtwhistle, a fellow Olympian and pro triathlete from Australia who’s staying with us here in Boulder ahead of his T100 debut in San Francisco.
I first trained with Jake when I was living in Australia back in 2014. Back then, the training environment was intense and every day you were surrounded by World Champions. We went through the trials of miles, and came out the other end prepared to take on the challenge of Olympic qualification.
Now, the environment is a lot more relaxed, but I’m still trying my best to hang on during our workouts! 😅💪
And a big thank you to longtime Tempo supporter - TRIHARD - who are giving you 20% off their incredible range of products. Just use “TEMPOCARE” at checkout!

IRONMAN
What is it: This past weekend saw two major developments in professional IRONMAN racing that could have serious Pro Series and World Championship implications.
Charles-Barclay validates: On Sunday, Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR) took a staggering win at IRONMAN Lanzarote crossing the finish line over 20 minutes ahead of the next competitor.
With this victory, the 2023 IRONMAN World Champion ensures she will be on the start line to defend her Kona title.
But she’ll have plenty of competition as defending IRONMAN World Champion Laura Phillip (GER), defending IRONMAN Pro Series Champion Kat Matthews (GBR), and 3-time 70.3 World Champion Taylor Knibb (USA) will all be fighting for the Kona crown!
Watch: Lucy Charles-Barclay wins the IMWC after a thrilling swim/bike breakaway!
Blummenfelt leads pro series: Fresh off his massive victory at IRONMAN Texas, Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR) continued his winning ways as he broke the tape at 70.3 Aix-en-Provence.
The Olympic gold-medalist started the run in a small group before pulling away at the 15km mark.
He now sits in first place in the current IRONMAN Pro Series rankings - and in the drivers seat for the $200,000 first-place prize.
Watch: Kristian Blummenfelt flies to victory in Aix
Tempo’s take: This year’s women’s race in Kona is shaping up to be one for the ages! But knowing how hard these athletes push in training and racing, we just hope they all arrive in Kona healthy and injury free! 🤞
And although the IRONMAN Pro Series was created in response to the T100 Triathlon World Tour, it’s showing that the “every second matters” model, and open access to all professionals is producing more intrigue racing than a closed model.
But don’t just take our word for it…
“With the “Every Second Matters” thing, I’ve genuinely started to care where certain athletes are in the field, and what that might mean for their season score. I’m probably in the minority here, and IM could probably do a little more to highlight the scores/scoring (it’s complicated, for sure), but I think it’s more compelling than T100 on a week-to-week and season-long basis.”
Women In Tri World Championship Report
What is it: Women In Tri UK has released a report analyzing IRONMAN results and the impact of participation-based slot allocation for the IRONMAN World Championship.
This is off the back of IRONMAN’s recent announcement that they would be returning to Kona, which could see age group women lose out on World Championship slots.
Key findings: One of the main takeaways from the report is that on average, 30% of women finish within 15% of the AG-winning time compared to just 14% of men.
It also highlights how high-performing female athletes can be disadvantaged due to slot distribution being tied to overall participation.
Call to action: In the report, Women In Tri acknowledges that IRONMAN is willing to review it’s slot allocation policy, and suggests a path forward that includes,
Reviewing the Slot Allocation Model - Adopt a performance-oriented model that benefits high-performing women.
Implement a Performance-Based Floor - Prevent roll-downs from being awarded to non-competitive finishers.
Read the full report and findings here!
Tempo’s take: Women In Tri have done a great job digging into the data and coming up with unexpected insights.
We’ve already talked about the return to Kona and the potential for age group women to lose out on World Championship slots
Deep down it doesn’t feel right that there wouldn’t be equal slots at a World Championship event. And if IRONMAN can only get a total of 2,500/2,600 athletes on the pier than having equal slots doesn’t seem like a bridge too far!

TRIHARD’s Swimcare Revolution: Healthier, Chlorine-Free Skin!
First off, let's be clear, I’m definitely NOT a skincare expert.
But after 20+ years of bathing myself in chlorine in the pursuit of triathlon excellence, I’m VERY experienced with the downsides of the front crawl chemical!
Last year, I reviewed TRIHARD’s Swimmer’s Shampoo and Pre & Post Conditioner - and loved how it rinsed away harsh pool chemicals and killed that annoying chlorine smell.
So when TRIHARD sent me their Pre & Post Swim Body Lotion, my expectations were understandably high. But simply using the product as intended wasn’t enough…
The Experiment
TRIHARD’s Pre & Post Swim Body Lotion can be used before and after swimming.
Pre-swim, it creates a protective layer to minimize chlorine exposure.
Post-swim, it helps hydrate your skin, alleviate irritation, and remove chlorine odors. My experiment was simple.
My experiment was simple. Draw an invisible line down my body, cover one side with TRIHARD’s Body Lotion, do a swim workout, and see if I really noticed any benefits! Kinda weird…but hear me out.
The results spoke for themselves 👇
Post-workout, the TRIHARD side had no lingering chlorine smell. And the TRIHARD side looked and felt healthy immediately after training.
On the non-TRIHARD side, crocodile skin - brutally dry and cracked!
The chlorine levels in my pool are pretty typical. So I was surprised to find I didn’t need to reapply the Swim Body Lotion after my workouts.
Once was enough to enjoy smoother, healthier, and chlorine-free skin for the rest of my day!
So save your skin and eliminate that annoying chlorine smell! Get yourself TRIHARD’s Pre & Post Swim Body Lotion and use code “TEMPOCARE” for 20% off ALL TRIHARD products!
