Cam Wurf’s Non-Negotiable Training

In a recent blog post, you mentioned having weekly "non-negotiable" training sessions that must be completed. Is this a training concept that age group athletes could also succeed with?

For age group athletes, I think this is an ideal approach as you all have so many other things going on in your life! Identifying key sessions that are easily attainable AND give you confidence that you’re maintaining or even improving your condition will physically and mentally fit.

  • The mental side of training is so important. So staying in a positive frame of mind is crucial.

It’s easy to focus on all of the things that you’re not doing or would like to do which can get you down. This happens simply because life gets in the way. It’s inevitable. Triathlon, or any sporting activity for that matter is meant to be a passion, something you can enjoy that makes you a better person. It’s pointless to allow something out of your control like wishing you could train like a professional, you’ve simply got other things far more important to do daily.

  • By achieving key sessions that are easily attainable you will find consistency and improved performance. And when you do get some additional time to do even more sessions, then you will really feel fantastic about yourself!

Even at the highest level of sport, I’ve found this, and the non-negotiable training has definitely transformed my season thus far!

Taylor Knibb’s Advice for a Tough Workout

Do you have any advice or strategies that help you get through a tough workout or race?

I have a few different strategies. Sometimes it takes one strategy, sometimes it takes a few. I think asking why it’s tough is important and if it’s supposed to be. Is there something in your control that you can change to improve things.

  • I.e. Maybe you need to take on some fuel? Or adjust your pacing/output?

Before the U23 World Championship in Gold Coast in 2018, I was having my pre-race discussion with my coach at the time, Neal Henderson. When we started talking about the run, he told me to break it into manageable chunks.

  • He said some days that may be 100x100m and some days it may be 2x5k’s. That specific conversation and advice has stuck with me to this day.

I tend to like to use time vs. distance to break things down and, specifically, I often convert my intervals into seconds, regardless of how long the intervals are. Then I feel like I’m making a lot more progress and celebrating that can give you some positivity. Separately or in conjunction, I often find that counting really helps me. It helps pass the time while you’re sitting in the discomfort.

Why Morgan Pearson Says You Don’t Need to be Perfect!

What training advice do you have for an athlete wanting to race a longer distance next season?

You don't need to be perfect. I knew my bike position was not perfect on the bike, my gear was not perfect, and my nutrition was not perfect. I also had quite a few interruptions in training leading into the race because I was in the middle of a move. It actually took a lot of pressure off and I was able to be more relaxed going into the race.
