T100 London, which form of fuel is best? And a silent running efficiency killer
TOGETHER WITH CASSADAGAMAN
Good morning everyone,
On Sunday I’ll be heading to Paris to watch my wife compete at the Olympics. She left earlier in the week and from what I’m hearing so far everything is going smoothly. She even met Noah Lyles on one of the shuttles!
My goal is to get a few Olympic-themed editions to you while I’m in there including previews and race recaps. It would be rude not to!
In today’s edition:
📈 T100 looks for a midseason boost as the series heads to London.
🏎️ Bars, gels, and chews are all great fueling options. But which one is best for your performance?
🆙 And why vertical oscillation might be hurting your running efficiency!
Thanks for being here.

ONE BIG THING
In Hopes of a Midseason Boost, T100 Tour Heads to London
T100
What is it: This weekend London hosts the fourth stop of the T100 Triathlon World Tour.
It marks the halfway point in the triathlon startup’s inaugural series. And after early stumbles in Miami and Singapore, they will be looking to build on the momentum from a successful stint last month in San Francisco.
Women’s race: The women’s race sees a cracking field led by IRONMAN World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay (who will compete with a stellar underground-themed bike). She will go head-to-head with recent T100 winners Ashleigh Gentle (Singapore) and India Lee (Miami).
The British crowd will have plenty to cheer for as recent IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz winner Kat Matthews, Lucy Byram, and Emma Pallant-Browne will be looking for big performances on home soil.
The race will also feature the return of recent Challenge Roth winner Anne Haug (GER) and former IRONMAN World Champion Chelsea Sodaro (USA).
One athlete who may shock the field is British short-course star Sophie Coldwell who was controversially left off the Olympic squad.
Men’s race: Not to be outdone, the men’s race also features a world-class field highlighted by world #1-ranked Sam Long (USA) and #2 Magnus Ditlev (DEN).
Youri Keulin (NED) the surprise winner of T100 Singapore will also be back on the start line in London looking to show it wasn’t a flash-in-the-pan performance!
Current IRONMAN World Champion Sam Laidlow - fresh off his disqualification at IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz - and David McNamee will be flying the Union Jack.
And the local crowd will once again cheer on Alistair Brownlee - 12 years removed from his iconic London Olympic gold-medal performance.
Tempo’s take: Off the back of a momentum-shifting race in San Francisco which featured a huge win by Taylor Knibb (USA) and an insane sprint finish in the men’s race, T100 has the chance to press on the accelerator ahead of the second half of the season.
With world-class pro fields and a sold-out age group race of over 4,500 athletes, a successful weekend would leave its early season coverage woes in the dust.
And the extremely competitive start lists don’t just reflect the $250,000 prize purse on offer. Many six-figure T100 contracted athletes who have been conspicuously absent from the tour including Anne Haug (GER) and Max Neumann (AUS) will finally be making their season debut in the Docklands.
Their return is well-timed. Recent high-level T100 board meetings were held where, supposedly, issues around athlete contracts and future athlete racing restrictions were discussed.
This is no surprise given some T100 athletes have expressed that their season focus is performances at races hosted by a rival pro triathlon entity…
How to watch: The women’s race is at 2 PM local time, Saturday July 27th. The men’s race is 2 PM local time, Sunday July 28th.
You can watch live on the PTO+ app or via the T100 YouTube channel (YouTube not available in Europe).

ONE GOOD TEXT
In a text to The Tempo, race organizer Rob Dibden spoke to us about the unique challenges of organizing one of Canada’s first gravel triathlons.
Organizing a race that takes place mostly in a remote area presented some unique challenges. Utilizing the expertise of local groups helped to overcome these challenges.
Communication and medical response on the course were my biggest concerns as they directly impact athlete safety. The Cowichan Search and Rescue team and the Cowichan Amateur Radio Club stepped in and their knowledge and experience were instrumental in keeping our athletes safe.
The course is tough and the athletes who raced experienced a real sense of accomplishment in completing the course. Next year we will add a Standard distance race to the Half to open up gravel triathlon to athletes who aren’t quite ready for the full half-distance race.
