In a Push for Growth, Supertri Seeks $60M

Supertri investment, high cadence/low injuries, and deadlift gains!

TOGETHER WITH BLUESEVENTY

Good morning everyone,

Often, this intro is the hardest part of writing the newsletter. Typically I’ll leave it to the end. Which doesn’t actually make sense given it’s the first thing you’ll read.

  • It’s always a good opportunity to highlight what’s going on in my training/racing world. But it doesn’t feel like there’s anything earth shattering to share on that front.

So, I’d like to hear what you’re up to!

Are there big training sessions you’re stoked about? Maybe a race? Or even a chill recovery weekend. Reply to this email and let me know what you’re up to!

In today’s edition:

  • 💸 In a Push for Growth, Supertri Seeks $60M.

  • 🏃 How shorter strides can keep you injury free!

  • 🦵 And level up your legs with deadlifts!

Thanks for being here.

ONE BIG THING

In a Push for Growth, Supertri Seeks $60M

What is it: Supertri, the professional and age group race organizer that focuses on short course triathlon is looking to raise $60 million to accelerate its growth as an event organizer and sport-tech brand.

First developed as an innovative professional triathlon racing circuit, Supertri has recently been positioning itself as an alternative to long course racing by amassing a portfolio of well-known short course races under its By Supertri brand.

It also developed the Toulouse Triathlon, which will see age group athletes compete for the first time this October.

Seeking shareholders: According to Bloomberg, Supertri is targeting family offices, sovereign wealth funds in Europe and the Middle East, as well as venture capital firms with a background in sport tech and high-growth start-ups.

Business blueprint: Supertri is looking for a projected valuation of $630 million by 2030 by developing a business model based on four pillars 👇

  • Mass-participation ‘short-endurance’ races under the By Supertri event brand.

  • An elite league featuring Olympic medalists such as Jonny Brownlee, Alex Yee, and Cassandre Beaugrand.

  • A hybrid esports triathlon championship, recognized by international governing body World Triathlon.

  • A digital community intended to rival Strava in the short-course endurance space.

With the funding, Supertri will be looking to acquire additional mass-participation events that could 5x their current portfolio.

Funding fellows: Supertri isn’t alone in the search for investor cash. The T100 has taken on private capital in 2020 (believed to be $12.5m), in 2022 (upwards of $30m), and again in 2024 ($10m).

Tempo’s take: Being different is in Supertri’s DNA. When they burst onto the scene in 2017 with innovative and dynamic triathlon formats, athletes and fans of the sport couldn’t get enough of the world class racing.

  • The initial goal of Supertri was to ultimately be a world class media product. And compared to other triathlon entities, they were, and arguably still are.

  • But, like its triathlon start up rival, they’ve had to pivot their business model to events.

Supertri’s bet on short course racing seems at odds with the triathlon market’s shift to longer distance events. Athletes used to start with sprints, now, the middle distance is becoming triathlon’s most popular gateway.

Supertri has also seen setbacks. They lost the permit for the Malibu Triathlon to the race director who sold it to them. The New York City triathlon hasn’t been held since 2023.

But, what Supertri does have going for it is that triathlon participation is growing, more people than ever are competing in endurance events, and health/wellness/personal optimization isn’t just a trend, it’s a fundamental shift in society.

So will Supertri take flight with favorable industry tailwinds? And will investors see a $60m opportunity?

  • If you see more “Supertri buys…” headlines, you’ll know the answer!
