Race Ranger Receives Rave Reviews

Plus: What is your afternoon coffee doing for your sleep? (Not good things)

Together With

Ultraswim

Good morning everyone,

Hope you had a great weekend training, racing, or otherwise. I’ve been able to get back to moving after the little collapsed lung episode, which is very nice, and is a good reminder not to take any swim/bike/run/whatever for granted!

In today’s edition:

  • Race ranger detects drafting and receives rave reviews.

  • Afternoon coffee drinker? Your sleep may not be stoked with that!

  • And why you shouldn’t “empty the tank” in training.

Thanks for being here.

QUICK NEWS

🇪🇺 Brexit bummer: British professional triathlete Lucy Charles-Barclay had planned to compete in Germany at Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau this weekend. But with British nationals only being allowed in Europe for 90 days (out of 180), she will have to miss out on the action. [TRI247]

👏 Absolute champion: North Yorkshire’s Emily Caffery, who lives with cerebral palsy, will be competing in a triathlon in support of the RAF Benevolent Fund, which has helped her in the past. [Yahoo Sports]

🤷 MIA: Seven Sri Lanka forces personnel who were in France participating at the World Military Triathlon Championship have reportedly gone missing, according to the Sri Lankan Defense Ministry. [Wion News]

ONE BIG THING

Race Ranger Riding High After Successful Euro Trip

As reported by Tri247, Race Ranger, the New Zealand-based draft detection startup will be returning home after successful trials in high-level competition. They will now head back home but will no doubt be featured in future events.

What is it: The technology uses a light-based system that shows officials and other athletes the distance between bicycles:

  • 🟠 light means the athlete is within 4m/12ft of the draft zone,

  • 🔴 light equals 1.5m/5ft of the draft zone,

  • 🔵 light means the athlete is in the draft zone, and must drop back or pass.

Athletes and officials alike are raving about the technology. With long-time official Howard Vine (GBR) suggesting, “They have it on every race we have…bloody brilliant!”

We couldn’t agree more.

WEEKEND RACES

World Triathlon Yokohama, Gulf Coast 70.3, Challenge Frejus

World Triathlon/Janos Schmidt

World Triathlon Championship Series - Yokohama, Japan

After a two-month break between races, the athletes were chomping at the bit to hit the start line. They battled each other and the torrential rains, which made for some pretty epic racing.

Women: Sophie Coldwell (GBR), ranked #1 going into this race, kept her hand on the crown with a strong swim/bike and a dominant run.

  • 🥇 Sophie Coldwell (GBR)

  • 🥈 Rosa María Tapia (MEX)

  • 🥉 Taylor Knibb (USA)

Tempo’s take: The return of current 70.3 World Champion Taylor marked the return of her trying to break away solo. Although she wasn’t successful this round, no doubt she’ll be looking to drop her competition in two weeks at the Cagliari, Italy stop of the WTCS!

Men: Hayden Wilde (NZ) used one of his best-ever swims to easily make the front pack, have control on the bike, and fly away from the competition on the run.

  • 🥇 Hayden Wilde (NZ)

  • 🥈 Matthew Hauser (AUS)

  • 🥉 Vasco Vilaça (POR)

Tempo’s take: Wilde has shown he is superman-like across the three disciplines. But his kryptonite, Alex Yee (GBR) will be on the start line in two weeks in Cagliari. Will the Kiwi finally take down his rival? Or will Yee once again triumph head-to-head?

World Para Triathlon Series - Yokohama, Japan

In the all-American PTS2 battle, Hailey Dainz (USA) was able to come out on top over Melissa Stockwell (USA) and Alyssa Seeley (USA).

  • Owen Cravens (USA) guided by Ironman Champion Ben Hoffman, was able to take the win in the PTVI category.

  • Lauren Parker (AUS) continued her rivalry with Paralympic Champion Kendall Gretsch (USA) and took the win in the Women’s PTWC category.

Ironman 70.3 Gulf Coast

In the men’s only pro race, it was a highly anticipated rematch between the top four from Ironman 70.3 St. George; Sam Long (USA), Trevor Foley (USA), Jackson Laundry (USA), and Lionel Sanders (CAN).

Like St. George, Long took the race by the horns and ran away with a convincing win in Panama City Beach.

  • 🥇 Sam Long (USA)

  • 🥈 Lionel Sanders (USA)

  • 🥉 Jackson Laundry (CAN)

Challenge Frejus

Sebastian Kienle (GER), in his swan song year as a pro, missed out on a final win with an unfortunate penalty. Bart Aeronouts (BEL) ended up breaking the tape.

In the women’s race, Magda Niewoudt (RSA) didn’t mess around, taking the win by over nine minutes!

👔 Suit up: It’s an age-old question, is the tri suit itself good enough for racing? If there is a built-in chamois, then that definitely helps. But there’s always more to it.
