  • And why the pre-race 💩 is performance enhancing!

ONE BIG THING

PTO Inks Broadcast Deals Ahead of European Open

PTO

The Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) has announced a slew of new broadcast deals ahead of this weekend’s first-ever European Open.

  • The geography of the new broadcast deals include Sub-Saharan Africa, The Middle East, China, and others.

These deals represent a tangible interest in the Triathlon startup’s product and bodes well for a wide-ranging audience to witness the incredible racing that will occur in Ibiza.

Given the goal of the PTO is to create a sustainable Triathlon product, these broadcast deals create certain opportunities:

  1. It increases the exposure of the PTO, which casts a wider net in the ultimate goal of creating fans of professional triathlon who may not have any actual personal connection to the sport.

  2. The broadcasters will ultimately pay licensing fees to show the races to their audiences. Given the PTO’s pivot to profitability (not just PTO really, all growth companies are facing this) these deals create sustainable income for the organization.

RACE WEEKEND

PTO European Open, Ironman 70.3 North American Championships and more!

PTO European Open - Ibiza, Spain

The most hotly anticipated race of 2023 has most of the top-ranked long course athletes gathered in Ibiza, Spain to fight over the 100km distance and fight for the 100k first-place prize.

Women’s race: The women’s race definitely has the most impressive start list this weekend with nine of the top 10 ranked athletes in attendance.

Ones to watch: All of them! Haha but seriously it is wide open who could take this race.

  • There could be a definite front group with Paula Findlay (CAN), Holly Lawrence (GBR), and X that could get away and stay away

  • But coming from behind will be the likes of Ironman World Champions Anne Haug (GER) and Chelsea Sodaro (USA), not to mention PTO #1 ranked athlete Ashleigh Gentle (AUS)

Men’s race: The dominant storyline going into this event is the Olympic Gold-Medalist showdown throwdown.

  • Jan Frodeno (GER, 2008 Olympic Champion), Alistair Brownlee (GBR, 2012, 2016) and Kristian Blumenfelt (NOR, 2020) will be going head-to-head for the first time ever.

  • Of course they could all be upset by athletes like Jason West (USA) who is arguably the fastest runner in the sport.

The PTO European Open should be one hell of a race! The races kick off Saturday, May 6th at 8:15AM CEST. The PTO has a guide on how to watch here.

Ironman 70.3 North American Championships - St. George, Utah

Women’s race: Skye Moench (USA) and Jackie Herring (USA) will be favourites for the North American crown.

  • But Rach McBride will try to use her strength on the bike/run to pull away from the Americans, and Melanie McQuaid (CAN) always has a few veteran moves up her sleeve!

Men’s race: Definitely don’t forget to pack your legs for this one. With folks like Lionel Sanders (CAN), Sam Long (USA), and Jackson Laundry (CAN) it’s going to be an absolute smashfest on the bike and run.

  • Look for Brent McMahon (CAN), Mark Dubrick (USA), and Justin Metzler (USA) to try and bank some time in the swim.

This race has live coverage starting at 6:50AM local time and can be viewed on Outside Watch.

Ironman Australia

Steve McKenna (AUS) and Sam Appleton (AUS) are favourites in the men’s race, while Radka Kahlefeldt (CZE) and Kylie Simpson (AUS) are favourites in the women’s.

Ironman 70.3 Marbella

Emilie Moirier (FRA) and Nikki Bartlett (GBR) are favourites in the women’s race, while George Goodwin (GBR) and Antony Costes (FRA) are favouties in the men’s.

White Lake Half

Travis Wood (USA) and Grace Alexander (USA) are favourites in this well-loved independant race.

First time: Big congrats to Pauline Alix, who will be the first young mother serve as an Ironman race director, at the Ironman in Mont-Tremblant, in what’s expected to be their biggest race yet. It’s a great interview all about family support and balancing life in a tough job. [Triathlon Magazine]

One bad step: We’ve all been there, one wrong step, your ankle rolls, and you’re out. It can take between six weeks to three months for the ligaments to heal. Once the pain is bearable, focus on mobilizing, strengthening and balance work before getting back to running. [220Triathlon]

TRAINING TIP

Bone health might not be high on your list of health-related activities, but it’s something you shouldn’t ignore. This helpful guide from the Montana Running Lab breaks down the best activities for runners that build stronger bones.

What to do: Consider adding zig-zag hopping, box depth jumps, and heavy and fast resistance training to your routine.

Deep dive: Outside interviewed Camille Herron, a long-distance runner, whose also a scientist who researched how strength training impacts bone and muscle. Their training program may not be for everyone, but it’s interesting nonetheless to consider the impacts of running on your bone health.
