Supertri searches for short-course success with new branding and races

Supertri rebrands and acquires races, does being fit equal being sick? And results from training

TOGETHER WITH MAUNA APPAREL

Good morning everyone,

This morning’s edition got pushed back a little bit to align with the release of Episode 1 of Tempo Talks, our new podcast. The first episode digs into,

  • The Oceanside 70.3 sellout signal,

  • What Supertri’s new brand and acquisitions mean for you,

  • How band-only swimming can help you get faster,

  • And a breakdown of Lionel Sanders’ new training method!

I had a great time recording this with Jeff Sankoff (The TriDoc), and I’m sure we can only get better from here! I’d love for you to take a listen, and if you have any feedback please respond to this email!

In today’s edition:

  • 🔎 Supertri searches for short-course success with new branding and races.

  • 🤧 Does being fit mean you’re more likely to be sick?

  • 🏃 And how long before you see results from training?

Thanks for being here.

ONE BIG THING

Supertri Searches For Short-Course Success With New Branding And Races

Supertri

What is it: Supertri - the umbrella brand for the Supertri Championship Series, and the SupertriE World Championships - has announced its newest mass participation brand, By Supertri.

Alongside the By Supertri announcement, the short course triathlon specialist also revealed they have purchased two large-scale mass participation events in Texas:

By Supertri schedule: With the announcement of the new races, Supertri also revealed its full 2025 By Supertri schedule,

  • Ascension Seton Austin CapTex Triathlon – May 26

  • Long Beach Triathlon – July 20

  • Chicago Triathlon – August 23-24

  • Kerrville Triathlon – September 27-28

  • Toulouse Triathlon – October 5

Although Supertri does owns the rights to the New York City Triathlon and the Malibu Triathlon, both races were not mentioned in the announcement.

The 2024 edition of the New York City triathlon was canceled due to scheduling issues, and the only permit to host a triathlon in Malibu was infamously usurped by the individual who sold the Malibu Triathlon IP to Supertri.

CEO says: According to Supertri CEO Michael D’Hulst, “By Supertri marks the next phase of our rebrand and represents a big step in our evolution to a triathlon community.”

  • “Through By Supertri, we cater to experienced athletes who want to go fast while also inspiring first-time participants to become lifelong competitors.”

No pro racing, yet: Although Supertri has made a significant pivot to mass participation events in recent years, its roots are in professional racing. However, the latest announcement did not reveal whether Supertri Championship Series events would exist alongside the mass participation By Supertri events.

  • And with all of the By Supertri events scheduled before the World Triathlon Championship Final, the short-course athletes who would typically populate the Supertri Championship Series may be unable to compete due to conflicts with their federations.

Tempo’s take: Supertri’s purchase of the CapTex Tri and the Kerrville Triathlon seem to be winners. Both races have strong year-over-year participation numbers, and in a hot growth market like Texas, we would expect those numbers to continue to show strength.

  • These race acquisitions also align with Supertri’s continued (and bumpy) push into the US market.

But is this the beginning of the end for the Supertri’s professional racing? Similar to the T100, Supertri started as a media product. But as market forces and economic realities have set in, both entities have had to overhaul their businesses to focus on events.

  • In the end, Supertri may just say Sayonara to its professional racing. Or, it could look to the past for inspiration. Four or five U.S. races could be compelling enough to create a refresh of the extremely popular mid-2000s Lifetime Fitness Tri Series.
