ONE BIG THING
T100 Reveals 2025 Races, Rebrands as the T100 Race to Qatar

World Triathlon
What is it: The PTO (T100) has officially announced the full list of races for its 2025 series and has also signed a five-year partnership with Visit Qatar to host the T100 World Championship Final.
The season-long series will also be rebranded as the “T100 Race to Qatar.”
Nine distinct races: The 2025 T100 Triathlon World Tour has now expanded to nine races and will see forty of the best triathletes in the world battle it over the 100km distance in many globally recognized locations,
Singapore, April 5-6
San Francisco, May 31-June 1
Vancouver, June 13-15
French Riviera, June 27-29
London, August 9-10
Spain, TBA
Lake Las Vegas, TBA
Dubai, Nov 15-16
Qatar (World Championship Final), Dec 12-13
CEO says: In a statement, PTO CEO Sam Renouf mentioned, “We’ve been very clear with our strategy for the T100 Triathlon World Tour to visit iconic locations, along with our desire to position the series as a race to one ‘hero’ destination.”
“This five-year partnership with Visit Qatar allows us to do exactly that, with the season-long series now being known as the T100 Race to Qatar.”
“the weekend will also host events for amateur swimmers, cyclists and runners - from first-timers through to our inaugural T100 Age Group World Championships.”
Qualified Qatar: Qatar, the small but wealthy country located on the Arabian Peninsula has a recent history of delivering large-scale sporting events as it recently hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has organized Formula 1 events.
World Triathlon tie-in: World Triathlon - who are in a 12-year strategic partnership with T100 - had its new President Antonio F. Arimany (ESP) on hand for the announcement. According to Arimany, “The T100 Triathlon World Championship Final represents a new chapter for our sport, combining elite competition with global accessibility and participation.”
The release also breaks down World Triathlon and T100’s age group World Championship strategy which aims to:
Develop a qualification system that will provide World Championship slots at each T100 event.
Allow National Federations to allocate WC slots within the traditional World Triathlon quota system.
Have top athletes qualify and compete at the T100 Age Group World Championship in Qatar.
Tempo’s take: With rumors of financial troubles and less-lucrative 2025 athlete contracts, the deal that T100 has signed with Qatar provides a desperately needed lifeline to help keep the upstart series afloat and its antsy investors at bay as continues to change its business model and “pivot to events.”
It’s been an unpredictable winter for the T100 as many of its marquee athletes made an exodus to IRONMAN including Kat Matthews (GBR), Sam Laidlow (FRA), and Magnus Ditlev (DEN).
But it was able to counterpunch by signing 2023 IRONMAN World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR), inaugural IRONMAN Pro Series Champion Gregory Barnaby (ITA), and recent IRONMAN 70.3 Champion Jelle Geens (BEL).
The question remains whether T100 will deliver on its promise of nine races. Last year’s Grand Final remained TBA until September upon which it was abruptly cancelled. Lake Las Vegas - which was hosted last year - should be announced at some stage.
But “Spain TBA” leaves a lot to the imagination given Ibiza has already hosted two T100 events. Did Ibiza officials look under the hood and decide to let the next city kick the T100 tires?
Also not included in the release? The requirement that contracted athletes only need to compete in four of the series races plus the Grand Final. As the schedule stands there is a gaping lack of confirmed events around the time the men’s and women’s IRONMAN World Championships will be hosted…
It appears that they haven’t learned from last year’s contract debacle where athletes were cashing T100 cheques and using it to subsidize their IRONMAN World Championship campaigns.
It’s also possible they just didn’t have a choice…
And where does that leave World Triathlon? With the President deeply involved in the announcement it’s clear there is also an incentive for the sports governing body. So will we see a World Triathlon Championship Series Race in Qatar? The Grand Final?
In the short term, we expect to see World Triathlon retire its Long Distance World Championships and fully embrace the 100km distance. As the T100 Triathlon World Tour has been designated the “Official World Championship Tour of Long Distance Triathlon” it makes no sense to have a competing race and unrelated distance.
But the Long Distance World Championship is an anchor tenant of World Triathlon’s Multisport World Championship - hosted in Pontevedra, Spain this June. Without it, the event loses much of its appeal to host cities.
Longer term it appears that the “multisport festival” that the T100 hopes will bring in upwards of 10,000 athletes for each of its events will hinge on absorbing World Triathlon’s signature multisport events like the Aquabike, Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, and Aquathlon.
Abu Dhabi and Edmonton are slated to host the next two World Triathlon Multisport World Championships. But will athletes be competing there? Or will endurance athletes of all stripes end up racing towards Qatar?
