Full weekend race recaps, super mushrooms, and TTL gives back

Good morning everyone,

I hope you had a great weekend of training, racing, or relaxing. I know I’m feeling a bit sore after a hard effort in my first race of the season at Clash Miami. It was a good kick in the butt, and I’m motivated for my next race! I had a great time, and it was fantastic to meet a few subscribers there.

In today’s edition:

  • A full race weekend recap 🏁

  • How Eric Lagerstrom and Paula Findlay are helping future triathletes 😊

  • Foam rolling for better running recovery 🗞️

  • And these mushrooms won’t turn you into a zombie, but they might make you faster! 💪

Thank you for being here.

WEEKEND RACES

CLASH Miami, Arena Games Sursee, Pucon, Sarasota

Clash Miami

CLASH Miami

Men: Big names, including Sam Long (USA), Lionel Sanders (CAN), Daniel Bækkegård (DEN) were looking for an early season W. But after Sanders crashed out it appeared Tom Bishop (GBR) was going to ride away from the field. But Jason West (USA) used an improved bike and a devastating run to take the win.

  • 🥇 Jason West (USA)

  • 🥈 Tom Bishop (GBR)

  • 🥉 Daniel Bækkegård (DEN)

Tempo’s take: This race was a great opportunity for the athletes to stack up against a world-class field. It was a shame Lionel got taken out, and hopefully he is okay after hitting the deck.

Bishop was absolutely motoring on the bike. Watch for him and his crazy-aerodynamic calf sleeves to be at the front of many races this year. Jason West is always a threat on the run, but clearly, he levelled up his cycling this offseason, and if he comes off the bike near the leaders in the big races, he will be taking down some big names.

Women: It was an incredible opportunity for the women to take a big early season win. Sara Perez Sala (ESP) exited the water with a comfortable lead on the chasers but was eventually reeled in by Sif Bendix Madsen (DEN) and Lucy Byram (GBR). Byram, who collected two pro wins in 2022, showed she was the class of the field and took an impressive win.

  • 🥇 Lucy Byram (GBR)

  • 🥈 Sif Bendix Madsen (DEN)

  • 🥉 Pamella Oliveira (BRA)

Tempo’s take: There were a few unknowns in this event, and it was anyone’s opportunity to take the chance for a big swing at an early season result. Byram has officially signaled her intention for a big year with a strong performance across all the disciplines.

Arena Games Triathlon Sursee

Women: The heat was on at Campus Sursee, as the aquatic center was transformed into an indoor triathlon coliseum. Zsanett Bragmayer (HUN) put on a dominating performance for the crowd that saw her win each individual leg of the competition.

It was a battle for second between Olivia Mathias (GBR) and Fanni Szalai (HUN), with the Brit just edging the young Hungarian. At just 15 years old Szalai put on a brave performance, and no doubt we’ll be seeing her more in the future.

  • 🥇 Zsanett Bragmayer (HUN)

  • 🥈 Olivia Mathias (GBR)

  • 🥉 Fanni Szalai (HUN)

Men: Olympic medalist Henri Schoeman (RSA) entered this event looking for a win after years of significant injuries and setbacks. He was able to distance himself on the fieldm ahead of the final leg, and took an emotional victory in front of the appreciative Swiss crowd. Local Sursee hero Simon Westermann (SUI) battled with Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger (FRA) in the final run but couldn’t hold off the flying Frenchman.

  • 🥇 Henri Schoeman (RSA)

  • 🥈 Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger (FRA)

  • 🥉 Simon Westermann (SUI)

TEMPO EXCLUSIVE

That Triathlon Life Gives Back

Eric Lagerstrom and Paula Findlay

It’s fantastic to see pro triathletes giving back where they can. Which is why when we saw that pros Eric Lagerstrom and Paula Findlay announced their development athlete initiative, That Triathlon Life (TTL) Development team, we had to get the full story.

How long has the TTL development team been in the works?

This is a concept we’ve been thinking about for years but were unsure how to execute it. We’ve really wanted to offer TTL kits for sale but wanted to do it in a meaningful way that could give back to the triathlon community in some way. About a month ago we decided we’d bite the bullet, design some kits, and create a template for what this could look like. We decided that supporting 5 development athletes was feasible in our first year, and we’re using sales of TTL kits to help fund the team.

Is there a specific moment or memory in either of your careers that’s influenced the creation of the team?

We both had really different experiences in becoming pros, I (Paula) had success at a young age so there weren’t many barriers to entry, but Eric really had to grind, working part-time in a bike shop, to make the jump. We appreciate that it’s even harder now to bridge the gap between becoming a professional triathlete and being able to make it a sustainable career. So based on our experiences and what we’ve observed, we figured we could help in a small way.

  • Triathlon advice they wish they had earlier.

  • How Eric and Paula manage their training and media commitments.

  • Their future vision for the TTL development team.

FAVOURITES

🏆 Oscars athlete: Champion triathlete Lesley Paterson was lined up for a few more awards last night at The Oscars. Her film, “All Quiet on the Western Front” was nominated for nine awards, including Best Picture. When the night was finished, the film took home four Oscars, including cinematography and original score. Paterson famously won a race that ended up paying for her continued use of the rights to the film. Congrats Lesley.

🗞️ Love the pain: If we’re being honest, foam rolling is hard and it hurts. But, there’s a reason why the top athletes integrate this into their recovery, it works. Given running is a huge cause of injuries for triathletes, it makes sense to dedicate some quality roll-time to your post-run routine. Here are three great exercises to do after running that will improve recovery. [Triathlete]

🍄 Fungus fuel: If HBO’s hit adaptation of the popular videogame, “The Last of Us” has taught us anything, it’s that mushrooms create zombies, and that is not great at all. Well, in the real world, mushrooms, specifically cordyceps, are actually super healthy and may be killer-good for triathletes. This article describes how cordyceps can boost oxygen consumption during exercise and provide other health benefits. [Outside Online]
