ONE BIG THING
World Records Smashed at Iconic Challenge Roth Triathlon

Challenge Family
Outside of Kona, Challenge Roth is the most iconic triathlon in the world. The atmosphere is unlike any other event, as over 250,000 spectators line the course, creating a Tour De France-like atmosphere.
It’s also known for full-distance world record times, which was fully on display this weekend.
Women’s race: Daniela Ryf (SUI), Chelsea Sodaro(USA), Anne Haug (GER), and Laura Phillip (GER) were the world-class headliners of this event.
The podium was most likely going to come from this group of four.
Ryf exited the swim in second and was fully in the driver’s seat. Sodaro and Lisa Norden (SWE) were two minutes down from Ryf, while Phillip and Haug were four minutes off the swim leaders.
Halfway through the bike, Ryf had put a devastating amount of time into the chasers, and she would start the run 18 minutes ahead of Sodaro and Co.
Barring any significant blowup, she would be the winner, and maybe a new world record holder.
Never under threat, Ryf would finish in 8:08:21 - an astonishing new world record for the full distance.
🥇 Daniela Ryf (SUI)
🥈 Anne Haug (GER)
🥉 Laura Phillip (GER)
Men’s race: Would Magnus Ditlev (DEN) be able to win again, in an incredibly stacked field? That question was truly answered.
The swim was supposed to hurt folks like Ditlev, but ace swimmers like Ben Kanute (USA) and Daniel Bakkegard (DEN) were probably a little crestfallen to see Ditlev exit right on their feet.
The bike saw Ditlev and wildcard Sam Laidlow (FRA) pushing the pace at the front and finishing the 180km ride together for what looked to be an epic run battle.
But like in IRONMAN Lanzarote earlier this year, Laidlow found himself laying low with cramps, which took him out of contention.
And no one would catch Ditlev as he held strong on the run to finish in 7:24:40 - a new full-distance world record by almost 15 minutes.
🥇 Magnus Ditlev (DEN)
🥈 Patrick Lange (GER)
🥉 Ben Kanute (USA)
Tempo’s take: All around, it was just a mind-blowing day of racing. Ryf seriously cemented her status as the greatest of all time. And Ditlev just did everything so fast, and at 25(!?!)m it feels like he’s just getting started.
Also of note Patrick Lange’s 2:30 marathon, which should easily net him the win in a normal race, but this clearly wasn’t a normal race!

WEEKEND RACES
World Triathlon Championship Series - Montreal, Canada

World Triathlon
Women: The sprint distance race typically lends itself to a run shootout, but American Taylor Knibb’s early bike breakaway saw her and compatriot Summer Rappaport start the run 15 seconds ahead of the chase pack.
Knibb would fade to sixth on the run, while Beth Potter (GBR) broke the tape for her second sprint distance WTCS win of the year.
🥇 Beth Potter (GBR)
🥈 Leonie Periault (FRA)
🥉 Summer Rappaport (USA)
Men: The rain-slicked roads of Montreal saw a few spills, but that didn’t deter Matthew Hauser (AUS), who led the field out of the water, stayed safe on the bike, and blasted away from a group of 7 in the final km of the run to take a dominant first WTCS win.
🥇 Matthew Hauser (AUS)
🥈 Manoel Messias (BRA)
🥉 Jelle Geens (BEL)
