TRAINING THOUGHT

Is There a Perfect Stroke Rate for Triathlon?

Probably not. There are so many factors at play, including most importantly, previous swim experience.

We found this great video from Global Triathlon Network that discusses optimal stroke rate for triathlon, and the many factors that influence it:

😎 Does optimum exist: According to GTN, no. Athletes at the highest level of triathlon are incredibly quick, with higher AND lower stroke rates.

💪 Strength: Like cycling, if you’re pushing a big gear with low RPMs, you’re putting more demand on your muscles. Higher cadence equals less strength demand. It’s the same principle for swimming, a longer stroke requires more strength than a shorter one.

🌊 Open water: Swimming in the open water has more variables than the pool. Choppy waves, other athletes hitting you, and sighting for the buoys are all factors to consider. With these in mind, shorter may be better!

Here at the Tempo, we advocate a higher stroke rate for triathlon since it helps keep your legs fresher for when you need them!

Happy swimming!
