Super League Schedule Showcases Series
And how do you actually avoid cramping?

Good morning everyone,
I’ve been training pretty low-key since my race in Boulder last weekend. I’ve even had some time to hit a concert (Barenaked Ladies FYI, they were fun!). But of course, like many athletes, my mind is already wandering to what’s next. Here’s to chasing more start lines.
In today’s edition:
Super League Triathlon drops ‘23 Championship schedule 🗓️
Paralympian Kamylle Frenette is on the pavé to Paris 🛣️
And how do you actually avoid cramping? 😧
Thanks for being here.

ONE BIG THING
Super League Triathlon Announces Championship Series Dates

📸 Super League Triathlon
The gist: Super League Triathlon, who brought short-format triathlon to the mainstream, has announced the four races in its 2023 Championship Series.
🎡 August 27th - London, U.K.
✈️ September 3rd - Toulouse, France
🏖️ September 30th - Malibu, U.S.A.
🌴 October 21st - Neom, Saudi Arabia
Returning athletes include previous champions Hayden Wilde (NZ) and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR). Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA), Alex Yee (GBR), Matt Hauser (AUS), and Taylor Spivey (USA) are all also slated to bring their talents to the league.
Finding footing: After COVID interruptions and a change in venues, Super League seems to have regained its footing, with all four venues returning from last season.
With the backdrop of the PGA/LIV Golf merger (backed by the Kingdom’s public investment fund), and Saudi Arabia’s continued push into financing global sport, it will be interesting to see if they use Super League to gain a further foothold into multisport.
Tempo’s take: As someone who’s competed in Super League events over the years, it’s great to see them announce a solid slate of races and lineup of athletes. There isn’t a more exciting format of triathlon.
One of the most painful experiences of my career was competing in the “Enduro,” which was three short, lactic-acid-filled triathlons in a row. Jumping back into the water after running is absolutely brutal, and I’ll enjoy watching the athletes from the comfort of home.
The press release did mention that they would introduce a “refreshed format.” If we know Super League, “refreshed” probably translates to a new form of pain.
We can’t wait!

Pre-race With Canadian Paralympian Kamylle Frenette

📸 Wager Araujo
Kamylle Frenette competed at the Tokyo Paralympics and finished 4th in the PTS5 category. She’s looking to be on the podium next year in Paris, and we caught up with her before this weekend’s World Triathlon Para Cup in Besançon, France.
How has your preseason training been? What was your big training focus this winter?
My preseason has been great! The big focus this winter was the bike - definitely the biggest gap for me. We put in lots of miles and are working hard on technical riding. I'll be getting a brand new setup in a couple of weeks which is super exciting!
What does a typical training week for you look like?
I usually do around 4 swims, 3-4 runs, 3-4 bike sessions, and 2-3 strength workouts. Every week is different, which is the best part of triathlon in my opinion!
What’s your goal for the race in Besançon this weekend?
This is my first race since November, and many of the top girls will be there, so I'm excited to see where I stand and use this race as something to build on and identify any gaps we can work on.
I also have my dad here with me for this race, which is extra special. When I first started triathlon we used to travel across New Brunswick every weekend of summer to race each other in local triathlons. I know I have a big season ahead and with the intensity of high-performance sport, I tend to forget why I started this triathlon. Having him here reminds me of my why, it's grounding and a perfect way to kick off a big season!

WEEKEND RACES
IRONMAN Cairns - Asia Pacific Championships
Men’s race: A strong southern hemisphere field that could go in a few directions. Braden Currie (NZ) and Steve McKenna (AUS) are two all-rounders who will most likely go toe-to-toe for the W.
Mike Phillips (NZ) is a game-changer on the bike, so he could roll away from the field while the rest look at each other.
Women’s race: Sarah Crowley (AUS) is the odds-on favorite to take the title here, since she won last year. But if she falters, Radka Khalefeldt (AUS) and Kylee Simpson could sneak through for the win.
